City hall is poised to relax density requirements for new communities in Calgary’s long-range growth plan, one of many recommended changes to the Plan It document that go before council September 28.
The original plan called for a minimum population of 70 people per hectare in greenfield communities; the city now recommends loosening that requirement by including both jobs and population in that number. “I’m concerned about that one,” says Ald. Brian Pincott. “Relaxing the requirements to the status quo is not moving forward with knowing what we need to do.” However, Pincott adds that many of the recommendations clarify the plan’s intent. (Most of the recommended amendments came from council members.)
The city is also recommending that two planned bridges over the Bow River designed exclusively for transit, pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles be scrapped from the plan.
