City hires Spanish architect to design pedestrian bridge

Bridge will likely be completed in 2011

After months of speculation, it’s official: the city is contracting Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to design a new pedestrian bridge over the Bow River west of Prince’s Island Park.

Calatrava is being paid $2.5 million and will be working with local consulting firm Stantec on the project (Stantec has a contract worth $777,000). The city expects to put the project to tender later this year or early next year. “Construction will begin in 2010 and go into 2011, and the bridge will be open that year,” says city spokesperson Dave Danchuk.

The city has budgeted $18 million for the bridge’s construction. The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) will be paying for the construction of a second pedestrian bridge linking Bridgeland and the East Village.
