City council votes against removing fluoride from water

'I think Calgarians need a voice in that fracas,' says Ald. Joe Connelly

Calgary’s drinking water supply will remain fluoridated after city council voted down a controversial motion to remove the chemical from the water.

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t vote to take it out,” says Ald. Jim Stevenson, one of the motion’s signatories. “There’s so much evidence that’s come down the pipe in the last 10 years that points towards possible danger of ingesting it…. I think we should be erring on the side of caution.” The motion, which was defeated 7-6 on April 7, would have created a special fund to provide fluoride treatments for children in low-income families.

Ald. Joe Connelly voted against the motion because he didn’t want to see the change “slammed” through. “At the end of the day, it is such a contentious issue I think Calgarians need a voice in that fracas, if you will,” says Connelly. A group of aldermen including Connelly and Stevenson have floated the possibility of holding another plebiscite on the issue.

Council also voted against implementing a living wage policy for its full-time employees — a largely symbolic gesture, since they’re already paid a living wage.

Of course it would, why would government officials want to take out what is keeping the population DOCILE! Even on your damn toothpaste bottle it says "DO NOT SWALLOW" so why are we still putting this in our water? ARE WE REALLY THAT CRAZY?

This would perhaps be a better story if the Aldermen could provide the "new research" instead of just saying it exisits because they read it on the inter-web.
A good follow up question for the next time this comes up.

And it would be an even better story if you could provide the evidence that he didn't provide the evidence.

Floride makes you a fat ass too. Nothing like forcing consumers to ingest the byproducts of the aluminum industry and then charging them to take away the side-effects to plump the corporate bottom line.
