Calgary’s drinking water supply will remain fluoridated after city council voted down a controversial motion to remove the chemical from the water.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t vote to take it out,” says Ald. Jim Stevenson, one of the motion’s signatories. “There’s so much evidence that’s come down the pipe in the last 10 years that points towards possible danger of ingesting it…. I think we should be erring on the side of caution.” The motion, which was defeated 7-6 on April 7, would have created a special fund to provide fluoride treatments for children in low-income families.
Ald. Joe Connelly voted against the motion because he didn’t want to see the change “slammed” through. “At the end of the day, it is such a contentious issue I think Calgarians need a voice in that fracas, if you will,” says Connelly. A group of aldermen including Connelly and Stevenson have floated the possibility of holding another plebiscite on the issue.
Council also voted against implementing a living wage policy for its full-time employees — a largely symbolic gesture, since they’re already paid a living wage.
