City council has approved construction of a new west leg for the city’s C-Train. The $700 million line will go up Bow Trail and 17 Ave. S.W. and end at 69 St. S.W. — a route that was proposed in the 1980s.
Ward 11 Ald. Brian Pincott wanted the new leg to go to Mount Royal College, but Calgary Transit advised against it, saying it would cost more and serve fewer customers. “Mount Royal is expanding, and in the very near future we’re going to have 20,000 people there every single day,” says Pincott. “Because they can’t rely on effective transit, so much of that campus is dedicated to parking lots. It’s insane.”
Pincott says council will be looking at how to improve transit service to Mount Royal and tie it in with the new C-Train line. “That I consider a victory,” he says. “For somebody who’s a part-time student who comes there for one class a day and who has an hour and a half transit ride on either side, transit’s just not an effective choice.” The city plans to start construction of the new line next year.
