City committee approves plan to curb urban sprawl

Plan It Calgary aims for 'more compact, mixed-use' urban design

A city council subcommittee has approved a plan to curb urban sprawl and create a “more compact, mixed-use urban” design for Calgary.

Ald. Brian Pincott says he’s “very happy” the Land Use, Planning and Transportation committee approved the eight Plan It Calgary key directions earlier this month. “It’s a testament to the good work that the Plan It Calgary team is doing, and also to how important this work is to our future,” says Pincott. The plan aims to shift much of the city’s growth to existing neighbourhoods, integrating new developments with improved transit, walking and cycling infrastructure.

Only one alderman on the committee — Dale Hodges — voted against the plan, which is scheduled to go before council on November 3.
