City commits $25 million to music centre

Pledge contingent on provincial, federal and corporate contributions

The new Cantos National Music Centre is closer to becoming a reality after a city committee approved $25 million for construction.

It’s expected that council will rubberstamp the commitment later this month. Once approved, the city will initially release $2.5 million to finance the architectural team and build support for the project.

The balance of the $25-million pledge hinges on similar commitments from the province and Ottawa, as well as support from corporate and individual donors.

Slated to open in 2012 in the East Village, the $120-million, 80,000-square-foot facility will be home to the Cantos music collection, several recording studios and a live-music venue.
