Circus employees fight animal rights' groups

Security confiscates pamphlets from patrons

Local anti-animal-cruelty activists are alleging that volunteers of the Al Azhar Shrine Circus at the Crossroads Furniture Mart were verbally and physically abusive to them and prevented patrons who had animal rights pamphlets from entering the show last weekend. Now they want to sit down and discuss the incident with circus officials.

“I was shocked by their behaviour,” says activist Lisa Shaw, who says circus volunteers were cursing and grabbing pamphlets from the hands of protesters and patrons. “One expects people to have a difference of opinion and be polite and respectful. My kids were shocked.”

Lloyd Norman, chairman of the Calgary committee for the circus, says he is unaware of any specific incidents, but acknowledged he ordered at least one volunteer move away from the group of protesters. “I have told our volunteers to ‘Just stay the hell away from those guys because they will push you,’” he says. “That’s what they do.”

Heather Anderson, founder of animal support group Daisy Foundation, says she was pushed by a circus clown. “Until Lloyd came and put a stop to it, they would not allow anyone with a pamphlet in their hand to come into the circus,” she says.

Two years ago, security guards at Deerfoot Mall allegedly attacked an animal rights activist protesting the Shrine Circus.

***UPDATE***

Video provided by Jeremy Thomas, one of the animal rights protesters, shows security guards preventing Shrine Circus-goers from entering until handing over any animal-rights literature.

Circus's that use animals are brutal. I would never support a circus that has animals and none of my friends do either. These animals should be sent to sanctuaries. Brutal business.

The behaviour of the Shriners, their staff and volunteers was unbelievably offensive, aggressive and rude. While they obviously disagree with the activists about circus animals being confined, exploited and abused, these accusations are made even more believable by the Shriner’s reactions to the demonstrators. If they use foul language, verbally attack and physically menace, threaten and intimidate a group of peaceful protestors in front of families with children, there’s no telling what kind of abuses are going on against defenceless animals behind the scenes.

The Shriners blocked vehicles and refused entrance to all those who had accepted literature from the activists, demanding that it be relinquished before they were allowed to pass. This certainly suggests that there’s something in those leaflets that the Shriner’s don’t want people to see - the truth perhaps? Though not an expert on such matters, I would consider confiscating material from patron’s pockets, purses and vehicles to be a violation of personal rights and freedoms. I hope everyone does their homework and finds out exactly what the Shriners are trying so hard to hide. If I’m not permitted to even be in possession of a pamphlet then there’s something seriously wrong here.

I will be boycotting the Shrine Circus but supporting the Children's Festival.

The Shriners could not care less about the animals and there welfare. They are all about the cash. The circus is a fraternal fundraiser-NOT a charitable one as they like to imply.
Check these links for information on some things the Shriners are trying to hide (some of their bad behaviours were included in the pamphlets, and I don't think they liked that)

Being at 5 of the protests, I couldn't believe how many parents didn't want any more info about the 'real' circus. They pretended we weren't there; they wouldn't look at the awful photos of the animals being chained, lying dying in trailers, and so on. It's horrifying that these 'parents' think it's OK to expose their children to the results of animal cruelty, which although look quite entertaining, are horrendous for the animals. It's like they're saying the means justify the end. These parents should really take a look at themselves and feel some shame.

I went to a circus years ago and you were able to go and look at the elephants afterwards. They were chained up and all they could do was pace back and forwards and you could tell from their eyes how desperately sad they were. It's not fair to them and it's definitely no life for any animal.

These animals are made to fear the 'trainers' and thats the only reason that they 'perform' these stupid and unnatural 'tricks' that can put their bodies at risk of injury.

Circuses are simply places of animal exploitation with the animals in cages living miserable tortured lives. No wonder they take the leaflets off of people because they don't want them to know about the whole disgusting business! Why cant they get more dignified jobs instead of abusing helpless animals? Circuses suck for the animals!

I have no words to describe what I was seeing in the video, most of you have already said it.

All I can muster up is how offended I am and I wasn't even there. I am speaking about the issue of forcing patrons to relinquish their flyer or they would be denied entrance. What if the patrons had these flyers in their pockets before the "guards" saw them - most likely they would get inside because this video was made to prove a point.

Somebody should organize a collective event where a huge number of patrons are able to get inside and "drop" these flyers around the arena "oops by mistake" - while I am haha-ing a little bit here, this is definately NO laughing matter (neither the inappropriate behaviour of the shriners NOR the way the animals have been treated by them not only at this particular show, but by the way they have been treated at every single circus).

Unbelieveable.

Absolutely unbelieveable.

Way to go to post that video! More and more eyes are being opened because of your actions and documentation!

Keep up the great work, you have our support!!!
