Cheaper booze in Alberta? It depends

Province cuts beer costs by $1.30 per dozen

When the Alberta government recently rolled back liquor taxes, you expected to buy cheaper liquor, right?

Well… not in all cases. Some stores slashed prices immediately, while others claimed they had stocked up for Stampede and summer fun at the higher prices.

So, you be the judge where you buy your booze this summer. But keep in mind that the province passed on the following average decreases to all liquor merchants:

Beer: $1.30 per dozen

Wine: 75 cents per 750 ml bottle

Spirits: $2.85 per 750 ml bottle

Bottoms up!

It is nice. It seemed a silly and insulting gesture to the public to place the taxes on these beverages.

There should be higher taxes on cigarettes. Also there should be a 5cent deposit on each butt that is redeemable at bottle depots so people stop throwing them on the ground.
