A seedy downtown bar that’s often illuminated by flickering red-and-blue police lights has lost its business licence over safety concerns.
Responding to a complaint from the Calgary Police Service, the city’s chief licence inspector found that the Cecil Hotel’s tavern “subjects the safety of the public to high risk.”
Last year alone, police fielded 1,700 calls about the business. That works out to almost five calls a day, and a police spokesperson says they’re on track to “meet or exceed” that number this year.
The hotel portion of the Cecil is still allowed to operate. The owner has a month to appeal the city’s decision if he chooses to do so. The city, meanwhile, is considering purchasing the property.
