Calgary gets C-minus grade on safety, B on education

Report says city is at 'crossroads of unrest' because of rapid economic growth

Calgary leads the country in domestic assault rates, but according to the Calgary Foundation’s recently released 2008 Vital Signs report card, 67 per cent of offenders don’t re-offend after rehabilitation.

The statistic is one of many contained in the report card, which gives the city a C-minus grade on safety. The highest grades were in the work and learning categories, which each received a B because of Calgary’s low unemployment and high rate of post-secondary grads. The lowest grade, a D, went to housing. The report cites house prices, decreasing rental stock and the increase of homelessness as factors.

Most of the grades hover around the C mark. The report says Calgary is “at a crossroads of unrest” because of its explosive economic growth.
