Calgary Farmers' Market muzzles the press

Staff hand deliver papers after market pulls stands

Several Fast Forward Weekly readers and Calgary Farmers’ Market vendors expressed dismay after the market cancelled delivery of last week’s newspapers and temporarily pulled the stands.

“One of the first tenets of facism is to muzzle the media,” says one vendor who fears repercussions from the market’s board of directors if his name is published. “They get rid of people who stand up, who are vocal.”

To fill the newspaper void Fast Forward Weekly staff hand-delivered newspapers at the market last week — efforts that were soon thwarted, as market board director Jack Habina, owner of Habina’s Harvest, demanded that distribution cease immediately.

Market directors decided to pull newspapers from stands two weeks ago and cancel last week’s delivery, says Habina, because they disagreed with a recent story about some vendors frustrated about the lack of communication — especially the fact that the board has signed a conditional lease for a new location but had not yet told most vendors exactly where they are moving next year.

“Why would we want to distribute information that is not in the best light?” Habina asks, adding that board members believed the story to be “not accurate and misleading.” When asked what part of the story was wrong, he says the board regularly sends memos to vendors, yet most vendors had not been told of the market’s new location.

The board, says Habina, did not tell vendors where they are moving to because the building owner of the new location, which is somewhere north of Heritage Drive, off of Blackfoot Trail, asked them not to. “We are trying to do a deal and there are tenants in the building.”

The board recently hired a local public relations firm to deal with the media. Habina says if Fast Forward Weekly is “fair” in its future stories about the market, the board will consider the paper to be re-established at the market.

Last week Habina was presented with an award plaque, as the market was voted this year’s Calgary’s best farmers’ market by Fast Forward Weekly’s Best of Calgary reader’s poll.

What a mess! It's such a shame that the farmer's market has become more about mis-trust, mis-information, and mis-management. I hope the PR company can fix the Calgary Farmer's Market, and maybe one day get back to the buying & selling of locally grown & made products!

I work at the Calgary Farmer's Market and am ashamed at the decision to have FFWD pulled from the market, especially when the original article regarding vendors being left in the dark about the new location was 100% accurate. It is unfortunate how the market truly is becoming a fascist organization, and I believe the man to blame for that is Jack Habina. Jack has been the source of many problems regarding market politics including un-ethical business practices on his part, and is not even a full-time vendor. His views do not correspond with the views of the market or other vendors as many of his decisions and actions are made for purely selfish reasons. In regards to calgaryhumper's comment, the other vendors on the board truly have the market's best interest at heart and should not be boycotted based on this decision. Jack Habina should most definitely be boycotted and kicked out of the market in my opinion.
Also, to further the market's bad press, has anyone at FFWD looked into the recycling fraud the market is currently committing?

I have been in and around the Farmer's Market business for twenty plus years and I have to say it is bitter sweet as the old adage goes 'what comes around goes around'...Jack has been the primary voice boycotting The Blackfoot Farmer's Market since the Calgary Farmer's Market inception back in 2003 when the majority of vendors were convinced to leave The Blackfoot for The Calgary Farmers Market, forced to choose one or the other and if they didn't, they were simply not welcome at The Calgary Farmers Market...every vendor subsequently since who tries to set up at The Blackfoot is approached by 'Jack' and his posse and what do you know, that vendor mysteriously does not return the following week...karma Jack karma, it will get you every time...by the way, I have heard The Blackfoot Farmers Market is attempting a major comeback and grand opening is scheduled for this Saturday, June 11, 2009!
