“It doesn’t seem like they’re telling us anything,” says Lindsay Ross. “(The protest) is to draw attention to the issue.”
The SPP is a plan to co-ordinate trade and security issues between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. The leaders of the three countries are meeting in Ottawa this weekend to hammer out the partnership.
Ross only heard of the SPP three weeks ago, and decided to organize the protest. She says that the fact few people seem to even know about it is a sign of the secrecy with which U.S. President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Stephen Harper are conducting the negotiations. “It seems to me like a huge issue. Everyone I talk to, no one’s heard about it,” she says. “The most important part is that people know it’s happening.”
There are fears that the SPP could force Canada to lower some of its environmental standards to match those in the U.S., as well as allow American companies more access to Canadian resources, Ross says.
The protest starts at noon Sunday, August 19 at City Hall.
