Better luck for next year's Christmas Tree program

'Unfortunately, some streets got missed because it’s a new program'

The city’s new curbside Christmas tree program has hit some snags: Not all trees have been picked up, and now it’s too late to participate in this year’s recycling program.

“Unfortunately, some streets got missed because it’s a new program,” says Lindsay Lofthouse, a city waste diversion specialist. “It’s a new program and everybody has to learn.”

Last month, the city started a program whereby residents could have their Christmas trees picked up instead of taking them to designated depots. The trees are then recycled by grinding them into mulch for city green spaces and will later be available for residents’ gardens and yards.

But one Renfrew resident says he’s miffed because his area’s trees were not picked up, even though he phoned the city in late January to say his tree was not yet collected. “Now I’m frustrated because the tree will end up in the landfill.”
