CTV spars with Shaw over fees

Broadcasters want cable companies to pay to carry their stations

Prime Minister Stephen Harper may be the master of attack ads but Shaw Communications is giving him a run for his money with full-page ads in national newspapers slamming broadcasters lobbying for what Shaw calls “a bailout.”

The uproar is over broadcasters demanding cable companies pay to carry their stations.

“It’s been a sore point from the beginning because generally you pay for what you use, and certainly all of our competitors get paid by cable,” says Len Perry, general manager of CTV Calgary, adding that CTV is now losing money.

Shaw president Peter Bissonnette maintains broadcasters are going broke because their conglomerates own money-losing newspapers.

So what could this mean for consumers? Paying an extra $72 per year for Shaw cable.
