Epcor Centre gets a revamp

Downtown arts venue hopes to double space

The Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts is getting a facelift— one could even say, a facial reconstruction.

Although plans are still in their infancy, Kerri Savage, communications director for the centre, says they are hoping to double the current space.

“The dream is there,” she says. “By the fall we are hoping to have a more definite idea as to the scope and cost.”

Discussions have being ongoing with the arts companies housed in the Epcor Centre, as well as with the three levels of government. The centre could be eligible for up to $25 million from the City of Calgary and will also be looking for funding from corporations and private donors.

Stephen Schroeder, executive director of One Yellow Rabbit, says he would like to see the building more visible. “It needs to be a much more powerful landmark,” he adds.

An architect has made some preliminary drawings, but Savage won’t let the cat out of the bag as to what they include, because plans are still changing.
