Arthur Kent settles score with Hollywood

Calgary journalist says he's 'very pleased' with settlement

Calgary-based journalist and documentary filmmaker Arthur Kent has settled a lawsuit with the makers of the Tom Hanks film Charlie Wilson’s War, but the terms of the settlement are confidential.

Kent says he’s “very pleased” with the terms. He filed the lawsuit against Universal Studios in April after he discovered the filmmakers had used video and voiceovers from his Afghanistan reporting without asking his permission or giving him credit. “The war in Afghanistan was not filmed by corporations,” Kent told Fast Forward in February. “It was filmed by men and women who risked their lives, and we deserve respect.”

Kent also took issue with the film’s “emphatically false” portrayal of the CIA’s activities in Afghanistan, and says he filed the lawsuit partly to make it clear he doesn’t endorse the film’s account of historical events.

It's amazing the liberties a big conglomerate will take making a movie. $75 mill for actors and red carpet and special effects. $0 for fact checking and attribution...

Way to keep them in line, Arthur!
