A recent poll commissioned by Environmental Defence shows that while only 29 per cent of Canadians think oilsands production should increase, a whopping 62 per cent of Albertans favour an increase.
Angus Reid conducted the poll, which also showed only 30 per cent of Albertans, compared to 52 per cent of Canadians, favour slowing oilsands growth and “investing in creating jobs in a clean energy economy.”
“The message that Premier Stelmach is putting out there is, ‘If we slow down the oilsands everyone will lose their jobs,’” says Matt Price, program manager for Environmental Defence.
This poll comes at a crucial time, as the federal government attempts to develop a climate-change policy before the Copenhagen international climate conference in December.
“Our concern is that the federal government will skew the system it’s writing in order to allow oilsands emissions to keep going up,” Price says. “That starts to squeeze everybody else.”
