Advocacy groups warn electricity bills to soar

'If it becomes too expensive... our manufacturing and industrial sector will feel that'

The numbers are, pardon the pun, shocking.

The provincial government’s controversial plan to spend $13 billion building new power lines will likely cost consumers far more than the province is admitting, warn advocacy groups.

In a recently released letter sent to the Tory caucus last October, the Alberta Direct Connect (ADC) and Industrial Power Consumers say residential electricity bills could soar by as much as $413 a year.

The two groups also say Alberta Electric System Operator’s projected power consumption numbers, which were used to justify the new power lines, are wildly inflated compared to historical trends.

It could also drive much needed investment out of Alberta and into lower-cost jurisdictions, says Colette Chekerda, executive director for ADC. “If it becomes too expensive to make products here in Alberta, our manufacturing and industrial sector will feel that,” she says.
