Re: “Lay off seals and hold the lattes,” by Michael Alvarez-Toye, May 1-7, 2008.
Imagine my surprise to open your fine publication and discover that not only did I not give a shit about the planet, but I am also “anthropocentric.”
Obviously, Alvarez-Toye is well-educated but has not spent any time among his own species, or he is the typical knee-jerk reactionary who has not noticed, gee, we are part of the food chain.
The point of my letter about the seal hunt was the people who do the sealing are doing so to survive, to make ends meet. The seals they hunt are not endangered — far from it. Again, what would he have them do to make a living? Perhaps he should walk a mile in the gumboots of a sealer before being so quick to judge.
I would love to hear his views on the Inuit people. Should they abandon their traditional ways of hunting and trapping? I know, maybe they should just open a casino.
Finally, I’m glad to read that Alvarez-Toye doesn’t like lattes. According to Wikipedia, too much caffeine is not healthy for sheep.
