Living wage good for all

Re: “Council moves forward on living wage issue,” by Trevor Howell, May 1-8, 2008.

Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart,

I read with dismay that you oppose implementing a living wage for city employees and service providers. I am one taxpayer that supports this policy.

Taxes should not be seen as another bill but rather as an investment in the community in which you live. A strong and healthy community is one that makes sure that all of its members are looked after. A simple policy of ensuring a living wage will save tax dollars and strengthen our community in the long run. Citizens who earn enough money can afford to pay for their own shelter, food and other necessities. They are going to be less of a burden on our social services. They will also have more confidence in themselves and our community. They will start contributing more to our society. They will commit less crimes because they won’t be driven to the desperation that many living in poverty feel. They will also raise healthier and more confident children.

By opposing the living wage policy you are ensuring an increase in crime and poverty. You will widen the gap between the rich and poor. You are turning your back on democracy. I will be turning my back on you and every other alderman in the next election that does not support this policy. I hope you will come to understand why it is so important to ensure that people in your community are paid a living wage.

Solita Work,
