Fur doesn't grow on trees

'I guess you are just ignorant regarding cruelty'

Re: Fashion off the grid, Sept. 17-23, 2009.

Why would you feature a fashion layout using fur? Don't you realize it doesn't grow on trees! And at the same time you display a homeless rabbit photo and a story from the Calgary Humane Society. How could you do this?!

I always thought your paper was informed and I enjoyed the different articles, but I guess you are just ignorant regarding cruelty. Have you educated yourselves about the fur industry? Hasn't someone in your office heard of PETA and how fur is obtained? Surely someone: the models, photographers, editors, etc. must have felt repulsed by what they were doing. It makes no matter that the fur industry animals are not raised as pets — the suffering is still the same.

Joan, save your fake outrage for something a little more meaningful. The bear was a silly prop in the photo shoot nothing more. Also, keep in mind that FFWD cannot only promote ideas/imagery that align with your lofty ideals because, well, that would make for one boring, one trick pony of a paper. I've always applauded FFWD's diversity, open-mindedness and hope they will continue on exposing Calgarians to different of schools of thought (even if I don't 100% agree with everything they do).

Thanks billnobody, appreciate the props and couldn't have said it better myself.

Also important to point out, again, that these are not fur garments. The bear specifically was awaiting taxidermy.

Oh, and I should probably defend Joan as well. We didn't have room to run the letter last week, so that's why it's coming late.

Hi Joan! None of us were repulsed in the least and I resent the assumption that we must share your vision and BE repulsed yet somehow submit it to the scrutiny of the public regardless. I also do know how some of the fur was obtained and the rabbit and reindeer were meat by-products. No one seems to be concerned about the cows that were "murdered" to create the food review. We are very proud of our accomplishments and I will continue to promote fashion in all it's forms and embodiments, including the use of fur.

Are you going to go after First Nations groups--along with other traditional, non-European cultures--who trap animals for their pelts? Nah--that would be politically-incorrect...

Find some other cause. Don't end up like Adolph Hitler, who introduced the concept of animals as 'fur people' and enacted the worlds first anti-vivisection laws. Or Karla Homulka, who ADORED furry things, but raped and killed her sister.

And, BTW, I DON'T eat meat. It's expensive, disease-ridden and...contained POOP!

Good lord ACS, stop it with the Hitler stuff already.Homulka? Are you kidding me? Talk about logical fallacies.

Homulka liked animals
Homulka raped and killed her sister
Therefore people who like animals will rape and kill their sisters.

Hitler protected animals
Hitler enacted genocide
Therefore people who want animals protected will commit genocide

Solid arguments, can't see any holes there.
