Re: “Syncrude sues Greenpeace for $120,000 after July protest,” by Jeremy Klaszus, News, Aug. 28-Sep. 3, 2008.
I read this article with amazement, particularly the absolutely absurd statement attributed to Syncrude spokesperson Mark Kruger: “When Greenpeace trespassed onto our site last month, we were very concerned because the activists were unfamiliar with an industrial operation, and unfamiliar with some of the safety hazards that can be present.... We just want to ensure that, in the future, nobody is putting themselves at unnecessary risk.” Fast Forward astutely noted that the Greenpeace protest took place on the same site where 500 ducks died earlier this year.
If Syncrude is sincere about the safety of others, which I highly doubt, and attempts to rationalize its absurdity that filing lawsuits will be a deterrent to similar actions in the future, then it is only reasonable, according to their rationale, that they also file suit against the estates of the 500 ducks “to ensure that, in the future, nobody is putting themselves at unnecessary risk.”
