Cowboys exist, animals well cared for

Re: “Rodeo inappropriate western heritage demo,” by Ken Erickson, Letters, May 15-21, 2008.

I'm not sure where Mr. Erickson is from originally, but here in Western Canada, the rodeo is very much a part of our heritage. Where does he think all the beef for the parties and off-grounds events that he suggests we attend during the Stampede comes from? Cowboys do still exist here, and I suggest that Mr. Erickson take a road trip outside of the city limits to see for himself.

As for his comment on animal cruelty at the Stampede, I would ask him if he’s ever seen a horse race recently, like the Kentucky Derby? Unfortunately, sometimes animals (like humans) can be injured in the name of sport, and sometimes these injuries are fatal. I am always saddened when I hear of an animal having to be put down during a sporting event, but the owners of those beautiful creatures are just as saddened by the loss as you are. The animals that you see at the Calgary Stampede are extremely well cared for, as are most animals involved in ranching here in Western Canada. If Mr. Erickson doesn’t want to go to the Calgary Stampede, then don’t go. But please don’t attempt to spoil everyone else’s enjoyment with your misguided views.

Tara Anderson,

Calgary
