Calgary becoming a standup city

Re: “You’re joking,” by Tony Binns, Cover, July 3-09, 2008.

Thank you for the great article on Calgary's growing comedy scene. When I moved here in 1997 there was but a small handful of comedians and wannabe comedians and just one club. These past few years have seen an explosion of comedic talent rise from this city as well as comics moving here from other markets. Many of these standups have gone on to do Just for Laughs, Comedy Now (CTV), CBC radio recordings and much more. We now have two full-time clubs (with one more on the way) and two part-time rooms that have seen some amazing talent from around the world grace the stages.

I do hope that Fast Forward will continue to support this great art form. I truly believe that Calgary will emerge as the city to live in for standup comics.

Anyone can recite a street joke, but it takes a professional artist to keep a room full of strangers laughing for an entire original show. I do hope this story encourages more people to indulge in the great comedy scene we have here in Cowtown.

Calgary
