Re: “Ralph’s vision realized,” by Gillian Steward, Viewpoint, April 17-23, 2008.
I understand Gillian Steward’s concerns raised in her article on the recent provincial election. While the Progressive Conservatives captured 72 of 83 seats, they only captured 53 per cent of the popular vote, with the Liberals a somewhat distant second at 26 per cent. Not a horrible result for the Liberals on a percentage basis, but not so good on a seat basis. However, the results do say that most Albertans are pretty happy with the current government, and it is trying to make some responsible changes in areas such as health care, education and sustainable development.
So Gillian, please don’t worry — democracy is not dead in Alberta, and we all still have a voice. I don’t recall hearing great cries of doom when the Liberal party in New Brunswick won 48 of 55 seats in their 1995 provincial election, and the sky certainly won’t fall here in good ol’ Alberta. If there is one thing I know about Albertans, it is that we are not afraid to shake off the dust and keep fighting for what we believe.
