Are Skin Colour the most important band in Calgary right now? They’re certainly the most unhinged, unruly and unpredictable, so I’m leaning towards yes. Featuring members of Sabertooth, Unfun and Flaccid, this is blown-out, noisy and terrifying hardcore that’s at once isolating and addictive.
In the local punk scene, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as when frontman Adam Willett coughs up the line “I am ignorant” on “More Girls for the Slime God,” just one of many standout tracks on this must-have cassette. Opener “Stagnant” is a similarly anthemic earth-scorcher, along with the fist-pumping sludge of “Manners Suck” and the explosive attack of “Thank God for IED’s.”
Noisily recorded by Flaccid drummer Jay Wong, everything sounds like shit — the way that it should. The bass is menacing, the drums are all over the place and the guitar is a perfect disaster of messy chords, Greg Ginn leads and tinnitus-inducing feedback.
Fuck what the blogs are telling you — hardcore punk is meant to be messy, fast and a little bit terrifying, three qualities that Skin Colour has in spades. Get this tape, catch them at a house show and watch your back.
