Right out of the gate, Ben Chasny’s new Six Organs album, Ascent, melts a million faces with soul-crushing riffs on the track “Waswasa.” It’s heavy on Zeppelin influence, but I’m not complaining. It might be that there are some lingering remnants from his time in the band Rangda, but holy moly there are some heavy jams on here.
Six Organs of Admittance is still primarily a psychedelic feast of insane guitar riffs and spaced-out vocals, but there is something about this record that makes the whole thing seem so much more ferocious and incredible. Focusing on mind-bending riffs and blasting out crazy solos seems to be a risky move for an artist who has primarily massaged our brains with slow acoustic drones and vintage Americana guitar riffs. All of that is still here, like on the track “They Called You Near,” but it’s nice to hear Chasny expand into wilder, heavy guitar solos, riffs and harder grooves.
“Even If You Knew” has a bass line that is just asking to be crushed by a devastating guitar solo, and boy does it ever get what it deserves. The whole thing is an incredible effort by Chasny, who may have released his best Six Organs album since School of Flower.
