There’s something a little strange going on when you listen to Carolyn Mark’s most recent album. Sure, if you’re a fan, you’ve come to expect a mickey of strange fuelling her music — after all, off-kilter is her trademark. It’s just that, in the case of Nothing is Free, it sounds like accidental strange. While her trademark pop feel remains intact, it’s laced through with surreal, serene serenades followed by urgently operatic tunes like the title track. Though odd forays into spacey techno tunnels turn down the dimmer switch on her original country spotlight, her hallmark humour shines on.
