When sister Jill and brother Matthew Barber last came through town, it was on their Sibling Revelry tour. Though they’ve each established formidable reputations on their own musical merits, the joint tour gathered more attention than either had earned on their own. They’re both passing through Calgary again this weekend, although this time, it’s just a coincidence that they’re arriving together.
Jill will be at Knox United Church on Friday, November 14, promoting her new album, Changes. A lush affair, Changes channels a world of jazz romanticism and sweeping strings, with her quivering voice sounding remarkably like Canuck piano chanteuse Sarah Slean. It’s a little odd, then, that she’s not only playing the same venue that Slean graced last time she came through town, she’s using the same opener, too. The effortlessly classy Royal Wood will warm up the stage and his sophisticated pop tunes will be a perfect fit with Barber’s set.
Matthew, on the other hand, will be playing up his more rockin’ side at the Gateway that same night, alongside The Spades, who will also be serving as his backing band. He’s got a relatively new album, too, the winning Ghost Notes. Looks like there might be some legitimate sibling rivalry this time around.
There are also entertainment options this week that don’t involve any Barbers. Bend Sinister are always a strong bet, and they’ll be at the HiFi on Saturday, November 15 as part of Sloth’s 10th anniversary celebration. Johnny Summers, Calgary’s answer to Chet Baker, will be at the Beat Niq on Tuesday, November 18, along with his crack quintet. And, if you’re into such things, The New Kids on the Block are at the Saddledome on Wednesday, November 19. I’ll be steering pretty clear of that one, myself.
