Like some proverbial insectoid Sisyphus ever rolling a giant bolder up a steep and treacherous hill, the masterminds behind Scarab Metal Productions have a lot in common with the shiny-carapaced Egyptian insect that shares their name. In short, they know how to roll all of their favourite things into one glorious ball, and they do it again and again. They have endeavoured to draw together some of the most provocative and promising acts in the world of heavy metal for one massive, all ages, mash-up tour known as Dawn of Destruction.
In addition to showcasing many Canadian acts of the dark persuasion, including Edmonton-based death dealers Warmarch and two of Calgary’s best — the popular Divinity (recently signed to the Nuclear Blast record label), and local grindcore experts Exit Strategy, Scarab is pulling out the big guns. Just as every travelling freak show has its headliner, an act so bizarre, so shocking, so inconceivably twisted that audiences will swoon at the sight and sound of it, Dawn of Destruction revolves around the terrifying Cephalic Carnage. As intensely brutal and surgically precise as their moniker implies, these Denver, Colorado natives are famous for delivering one of the most visceral live performances in metaldom today.
Indeed, Cephalic Carnage’s malevolent spirit and penchant for super-sonic experimentation make them the perfect foil for the macabre misanthropy of Uppsala, Sweden’s Watain. Locked for this year’s Wacken festival in Germany, Watain ranks amongst Scandinavian dark metal’s elite, earning glowing comparisons to the likes of Opeth and Darkthrone.
Texan trio Averse Sefira, fresh from a U.S. run with Immolation and Bephelgor, will be rounding out the evening with blistering new material from their latest release on Candlelight Records Advent Parallax. Adherents of the bands Sufferance, BlackSky and Operation Winter Mist are truly in for a treat as current and past members of all three bands have recently amalgamated and will be appear as the metallic colossus — Scopes Monkey Trial. With six full hours of blood-curdling music to be had, Dawn of Destruction metal fest is surely, in the words of Sammy Hagar, your one way ticket to midnight.
