What was up with November, 1998? This month, we’ve already seen 10th anniversary celebrations for Sloth Records, Meter Records and Dub at the Pub. Now, The Motherfuckers are celebrating a decade of clinging to punk’s corpse (hey, they’ve summed up their career as “10 years of kicking the same dead Sex Pistol) with an all-ages show at Tubby Dog and an adults-only romp at the Underground, both on Saturday, November 29. Fellow shit-kickers The Falling Pianos, Madcowboys and The Wasteoids will all chip in at that later show, which better feature at least three circle pits, or I’m going to be really disappointed.
Saturday also sees another Alberta legend (sorta) come through town. Wet Secrets have only been around for about three years, but between Slow Fresh Oil, Whitey Houston and Shout Out Out Out Out, frontman Lyle Bell rocked this province for more than a decade. Now, everyone’s favourite rock ’n’ roll marching band is taking to the Marquee Room alongside Christian Hansen & the Autistics. If you haven’t seen them yet, you need to, and if you have, you’re probably planning on seeing them again.
If you still haven’t figured out how to start your weekend, there are a few options on that front, too. Vancouver’s Left Spine Down will be at the Stetson on Friday, mixing The Black Halos’ punk rock drive with Front Line Assembly’s industrial esthetic (LSD features members of both). The night before, Regina’s Sylvie will be picking up where spazz-punks Despistado left off, filling The Gateway with propulsive rhythms and twisted melodies. And for those who prefer to dance the night away for a good cause, K-OS will be DJing at Flames Central on Friday, November 28. That event also features local singer Lindsay Ell, rockers The Matt Blais Connection (who recently won $200,000 from Fuel 90.3) and pop songwriter Trey Mills, with proceeds going to the Calgary-based Christmas Future charity.
If you’re still full of piss and vinegar when the weekend wraps up, swing by the Roundup Centre on Tuesday, December 2, when slam poet and rapper Sage Francis joins Thursday and Rise Against. Or hold off until Wednesday and catch The Crystal Method at The Warehouse. Because, honestly, “Trip Like I Do” was a pretty bitchin’ song.
