With Valentine's Day upon us, Calgary’s jazz scene is ready to set the mood. Even if you’re not romantically inclined, there’s still plenty to choose from.
On the sentimental side, Beat Niq is hosting its Valentine’s Weekend on February 12 and 13, featuring vocalist Mary Boyes. Boyes will be accompanied by a trio consisting of Simon Fisk on bass, Robin Tufts on drums and Keith Smith on guitar.
If you want to carry the mood later into the month, then don't miss Sillan & Young's gig on Thursday, February 18. Johanna Sillanpaa (vocals) and Aaron Young (guitar) have captured Calgary fans with their intimate performances for years. Fitting then, that they've been nominated for the Group of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year categories at the 2010 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. Catch this renowned duo, backed by Kodi Hutchinson (bass) and Tyler Hornby (drums), at Beat Niq.
Beat Niq hosts a few other gems this month, and special mention must go to the Havard Wilk Trio, slated to perform on February 15 and 16. Thanks to Fisk, the Norwegian trio, which just happens to be on holiday in Canada, has been snagged for a two-night gig. Wilk is considered one of Norway’s most talented pianists and composers, and he's played with some of Scandinavia's most notable groups, like Atomic, Free Fall and Atomic/Schooldays. He's performing in Calgary with Ole Morten Vågan (bass), and Håkon Mjåset Johansen (drums). If that isn't special enough, the gigs will feature Wilk's trio accompanied by Fisk on bass and Seattle-based percussionist-composer Jerry Granelli. Expect two evenings of original and improvised music. Granelli and Fisk will play a short duo set each evening, then will be joined by Havard's trio for some quintet pieces. Havard will finish off each evening with his trio. Do not miss this special performance.
Mid-month, check out Broken City for its jazz jam, slated for 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the afternoon of Saturday, February 13. Co-hosted by vocalist Suza and bassist B. Rothwell, the jam will also feature Tricia Edwards (piano) and Doug Paddock (drums).
Plan the weekend after Valentine’s carefully, because you'll want to catch some stellar performances at Beat Niq. On February 22, the University of Calgary’s Monday Night Jazz Series presents pianist and composer Andrew Glover with his quartet. Glover's work blends smooth jazz and world fusion, and he's worked with artists as diverse as Scott Hamilton, Jack Semple, the Big Miller Band and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Glover will be backed by Bob Tildsley (trumpet), John Taylor (bass) and Sandro Dominelli (drums).
Two days before Glover, Beat Niq hosts renowned Canadian bass player Chris Jennings. A fine performer, composer, leader and arranger, Jennings plays both upright and electric basses. He'll be joined by artists-in-residence from the Banff Centre for his February 19 and 20 gigs.
