With two of Calgary’s top musicians, Jay Crocker and Chad VanGaalen, celebrating their upcoming releases (see cover story this issue), it’d be a shame not to mention once-local chanteuse Feist. The singer garnered massive international attention thanks to her two Arts&Crafts releases, 2004’s Let it Die and 2007’s The Reminder — enough attention to warrant a headlining set at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Saturday, October 18. It won’t be the first time she’s played that venue (she charmed the crowd at the 2008 Juno Awards, where she won artist, songwriter, single, album and pop album of the year), but considering she was bubbling over with excitement at that event, odds are she’ll be even more flabbergasted this time around. The always reliable Hayden will open, hopefully playing a few tunes off his excellent January release, In Field & Town.
If you can’t swing a ticket to that one, or if you prefer your indie-pop in a more intimate venue, there’s always Young and Sexy at The Marquee Room that same night. Four albums in, the band is better than ever at concocting effortlessly breezy pop tunes that recall everything from Belle and Sebastien to Destroyer. They’ll be joined by Vancouver’s The Neins Circa, purveyors of infectious piano and glockenspiel ditties and a mysterious outfit dubbed The Church of the Very Bright Lights.
You can’t really call what Henry Rollins is doing these days music, but then again, some people said the same thing about Black Flag (zing!). His spoken word performances are every bit as furious as his punk rock ones used to be, though, and he has plenty of monologue fodder on his current Recountdown Tour, which hits the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Monday, October 20. The American presidential election will be his main focus, naturally, but chances are Rollins will have some appropriately scathing comments about a host of other current events — maybe even the comparatively mild but equally absurd contest that is the Canadian federal election.
Lastly, this column has mentioned him before, but that’s no reason not to do it again — DJ Jazzy Jeff will be spinning at Tantra this Wednesday, October 22. As anyone who watched the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air can attest, no one gets thrown out of a wealthy judge’s house quite like Jazz. His skills go far beyond sitcom cameos, though, and his sets are not to be missed.
