Doo-wop and Grad Hop

Nostalgia reigns supreme in this week’s concert listings

It would appear the recent spate of nasty weather has Calgary’s musicians longing for better times. This week, the keyword for concerts is nostalgia.

Chances are good that anyone heading to Broken City on Thursday, June 5 is too young to have lived through the doo-wop era — it’s been awhile since neighbourhood toughs gathered around flaming garbage cans to work on their harmonies. That’s not stopping the fine ladies of Woodpigeon from stepping into the role of The Pigeonettes, the girl group Phil Spector would have killed for (is that tasteless?). Add in The Lovebullies, a bake sale and a post-concert 1950s dance party, and you have one boss night — and that’s the word from the bird.

While The Pigeonettes are conjuring a fondly remembered era, CJSW is going to be re-creating a night many of us would rather forget. On Wednesday, June 10 at The Marquee Room, DJs Dear Adrienne, Queen Bee and Mark Shields bring you Grad Hop, a night of prom dresses and awkward rejection. Or maybe I’m just giving away too much about my own experience — grad was the best night of our lives, right?

Speaking of things past their prime, Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits are unlikely to receive either a critical or commercial revival anytime soon. If you look past that “Henry VIII” song, though, you’ll find they actually wrote some of the sweetest and catchiest tunes of the ’60s — and “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” might just be the most endearing karaoke tune of all time. Catch them at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino on Friday, June 6.

Canadian chanteuse k.d. lang has been considerably luckier in her 24-year career. Her 2008 release on Nonesuch Records, home to luminaries like Wilco and Sam Phillips, was received with open arms by Canadian music fans and critics alike — not bad for her first album of original material in almost a decade. The always-enchanting lang will be stopping by the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Monday, June 9. It’s a great way to catch up with an artist who’s been part of the Canadian landscape for a quarter of a century.

For those of you who don’t want to indulge in warm reminiscences, though, this Saturday will be your chance to live in the here-and-now with some top-notch local rock. All-girl hard-rockers Killbourne will strut their stuff at the Palomino, showing exactly why they earned a spot at this year’s Virgin Festival. At the same time, Heat Ray, featuring members of Calgary’s Hot Little Rocket and Edmonton’s The Floor, will turn The Marquee Room into a flaming death trap — of rock.
