If you’re looking to discover some of Alberta’s up-and-comers, there’s no better place to start than Waynestock, presented by music blog RosesMP, at the Palomino on November 12 and 13. Yep, Slates — that band featured on this very page — is one of the many outstanding acts playing, but there are plenty more: Lethbridge’s Fist City and Square Waves make the drive. Winnipeg’s bliss-pop act The Details stops in, too, before making its way to Ontario for a mini-tour. And that’s not even mentioning locals Outlaws of Ravenhurst, who bring the Manowar glory minus the power metal cheese, or What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and Bikeland, who promise (or perhaps threaten) to turn up the distortion even further. Don’t miss Edmonton’s Krang, either, whose sloppy brand of post-pop should melt more than a few minds.
Or, for the bedroom dancers among us, head to Broken City on November 13. Woodhands brings its brand of grimy bangers — although the duo’s sophomore offering, Remorscapade, displayed plenty more emotional depth — but locals Napoleon Skywalker might be the real highlight. While never afraid of dancefloor shakers, the group lays down plenty of ethereal, shimmering breathers, too. Head to its Soundcloud page to hear an older set — although be warned, they’ll be unveiling plenty of new delights (and new shirts, too).
Sticking with all things electronic, head back to Broken City the following day to catch Vancouver DJ Longwalkshortdock, a.k.a. Dave King. Featuring distorted, heavy synths, King also veers into more exploratory chiptune territory as well — fitting, as he says his music is heavily influenced by video game soundtracks of yore. Or, for a different type of dance party altogether, head to HiFi for the dusty swing of local rockabilly faves Hurricane Felix, who will be performing with howlin’ horror-punk legends Matadors (who claim that they invented the genre).
For those with folkier tastes, you’re also in luck. Six Shooter Records’ favourite Luke Doucet — whose latest album, Steel City Trawler explored his louder tendencies — plays the Republik on Thursday, November 11 with Sunparlour Players. The options don’t end there, though, with indie-folk boy-girl tandem F&M bringing its sophisticated brand of piano-driven folk to the Ironwood on Monday, November 15. On the other hand, Polaris-nominated puppy killer Dan Mangan plays with a stripped-down version of the eccentric (weewerk) pop collective The Burning Hell at Knox United Church on Wednesday, November 17. Finally, don’t miss the melancholy pop of former Earthtones member Becker Hutchings, who will be debuting his new album, The Difference Between Jam and Jelly, at The Marquee Room on Thursday, November 18. How’s that for a week?
