Are we officially in the future yet? We’re 13 years past Judgement Day, a full decade past the Space Odyssey and freshly into The Year We Make Contact, if you want to define these things based on sci-fi movies (which I clearly do).
If it is the future, what better way to ring it in than with Star Trek: The Music? From January 13 through January 15, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra will be paying tribute to one of sci-fi’s longest-lived phenomena. With hosting duties handled by Q (John de Lancie) and The Doctor (Robert Picardo), it’s sure to be… engaging.
Putting that potentially too-revealing pun behind us, there’s still plenty of other options this week. Starting with Mudhoney at the Warehouse on Saturday, January 9. It’s been a full 21 years since Mark Arm and company put out the instant classic Superfuzz Bigmuff and helped kick-start that whole grunge thing, and they’ve somehow managed to stay just as ragged up through 2008’s The Lucky Ones. Plus, with Calgary’s The Ex-Boyfriends and Edmonton’s Slates opening, you know you’re in for a noisy good time.
Saturday also sees award-winning Edmontonian Ben Sures head to the Ironwood. The singer-songwriter has spent the last 15 years finding the perfect balance between his more serious moments and his ever-present sense of humour — go to ffwdweekly.com to read our interview. And feel free to head back to the Ironwood on Tuesday, January 12, when still more Edmontonians will be around in the form of pop-happy rockers Falklands.
Rounding out the week, locals The Fast Romantics, Heat Ray and Key to the City will be at the re-reopened Republik on Thursday, January 14. Heat Ray and the Romantics are both using their sets as an excuse to film music videos, so show up in your finest, scream your loudest and dance your rowdiest. It’s just the right thing to do.
