Three things to accomplish this month: find the best original jazz compositions in Calgary, support strong talent from Canadian jazz programs and prepare yourself for an improvisational ride that’s one of the best in North America. You can do all of this by catching three mid-month performances.
Most young jazz musicians will tell you that playing a gig is only half the equation. The other half, for a serious musician, is composing original tunes. Yes, mix it up a bit with a few standards, but always keep your eye on developing original ideas and innovative approaches. That’s what makes a whole, healthy and interesting jazz musician. This happens to be the mantra of two acts at Beatniq on August 17 and 24.
Peter Carruthers, jazz bassist and recent grad from the Capilano College Jazz Studies program, brings his trio to town on August 17. They will perform mostly original material, some by Carruthers, some by his fellow band members. Expect a broad spectrum: Carruthers’s compositions will be flavoured by his many gigs with West Coast indie-pop rock groups like The Ingredients and Lotus Child.
Ex-Calgarian Dan Gaucher brings his Stop Time quartet here on August 24. Joined by new local Simon Fisk, you can expect Gaucher’s drums and Fisk’s bass to push improv boundaries. Gaucher’s original compositions will draw from his early days doing the circuit with punk and indie rock bands like Shecky Forme. Combine his Mount Royal College jazz program studies and a stint in the Capilano program, and you have an awesome musician.
Awesome is also the best word for New York horn man Peter Evans. The trumpet player is here for one night only, August 16, thanks to Bug Incision’s Chris Dadge. “He's played with a bunch of sick players,” says Dadge, “he's got a shit-hot record on (improv grandaddy) Evan Parker's label and he plays the most unreal solo trumpet music ever.” Evans specializes in improvisation and avant-garde music, and he’s been a staple in New York’s music scene for the last four years. Guaranteed, when Dadge, Rachael Wadham and Evans play EMMEDIA (202 351 11th Ave. SW) this week, Calgarians will hear the best in this style of music.
