A lot of Calgarians are focused on staying warm these days. This month’s music should help with keeping up the heat. Take the fifth annual Brazilian Carnivale at Quincy’s on February 16. The Carnivale brings Montreal’s Bombolesse group to town; the sizzling seven-piece band mixes Brazilian pop music, samba, reggae, jazz and rock. That’s just one of the many acts at Carnivale, which will heat things up with Brazilian-born singer-composer-guitarist Eduardo Mendonca, Joshua Wilson, Ache Brazil and others.
The Johnny Summers Quartet is playing a fundraiser at Hotel Arts on Valentine’s Day. Art with Heart will support Alex Community Health Centre’s work with low income and homeless Calgarians. Tickets are $100 each, and the evening will include gourmet food, an art sale and auction, as well as door prizes.
Near the end of the month, the blues hit town. John Hammond, the guitarist and blues singer who has played with everyone from Eric Clapton to Tom Waits and Jimi Hendrix, is at Knox United Church on February 21.
Not enough blues for you? The annual Calgary Midwinter Bluesfest should fix that, running from February 25 to March 1 throughout the city. Watch for workshops for up-and-coming blues artists, as well as big performances at Mike’s Juke Joint and MacEwan Hall. Audiences can expect Hubert Sumlin, Ellen McIlwaine, Jack Semple, Bill Johnson and others. Chicago bluesman Sumlin is definitely worth checking out — considered a living blues legend, he’ll be in town for two rare performances
