Stock up on vinyl

This weekend, indulge in record releases and a hell of a sale

Been thinking about stocking up on vinyl? Well, this is the weekend to do it. This column doesn’t usually plug sales, but it’s hard to beat The Inner Sleeve’s annual “All You Can Carry” event. For $35, you get exactly what the name promises — namely, a massive stack of records. The event takes place on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30, and you’ll probably want to get there bright and early — the sale stock gets picked pretty clean by mid-afternoon.

If you’re aiming for quality over quantity, Friday, May 28 holds a pair of excellent options. Local instrumental rock trio Günther is releasing a brand-new 7-inch at the Palomino, and as if the band’s can’t-be-beat live show isn’t incentive enough, Winnipeg Rockers The Perms and Sudbury’s atmospheric Meadowlark Five are also on the bill. At the same time, Broken City will host a pair of Lethbridge all-stars, Square Waves and Radians, releasing new 12-inch and 7-inch records, respectively. That lineup also includes heavy shoegazers Heat Ray and Vancouver’s all-encompassing art-pop project Collapsing Opposites.

The decisions don’t get any easier on Saturday, May 29. Normally, it’d be hard to turn down the liquid-smooth synth pop of Austin’s Neon Indian, whose HiFi performance will serve as a warm-up for his Sasquatch set on Monday, May 31. Then again, normally Gift of Gab from Blackalicious isn’t headlining a party at Artspot Gallery, which will also feature visual artists, body painting and a house-party-gone-crazy atmosphere. Tickets for the Artspot party are selling only in advance, so if you’re curious, you’ll have to make up your mind sooner rather than later.

Those aren’t the only Saturday options, either. The Marquee Room has a bill stacked with Canadian hip hop talent — Toronto’s Magnolius and Leo37 will join Calgary’s Blist and Detroit hip hop collective United States of Mind for a pretty unbeatable $10 lineup. And if you’re feeling more like rocking out, there’s always blues-rock two-piece The Pack A.D., which’ll be opening for venerable country-rockers The Sadies at Dicken’s Pub. Whichever way you go, you really can’t go wrong.

On May 31, be sure to check out musical mathematician Caribou at the Republik — his latest, Swim, is a dramatic departure from 2008’s Polaris-winning Andorra, but its dissonant grooves are well worth getting lost in. Get there early, too: Caribou mastermind Dan Snaith has excellent taste in openers, enlisting Born Ruffians and Fuck Buttons on previous tours, so there’s every reason to think current tourmates Toro Y Moi will be worth checking out.

Just got a call from Inner Sleeve, and they're postponing the sale due to the weather. So, you have another week to work on your vinyl-carrying abilities.
