Skipping the folk fest? Check out some cheap hardcore

Plus other goodness from this week in Calgary music

It would be easy enough to devote this column entirely to the Calgary Folk Music Festival. Lord knows there are plenty of artists we haven’t even mentioned in the pages this week who are deserving of profiles, from unclassifiable instrumentalists Bell Orchestre to indie-folker Iron and Wine. With enough room, we’d try to spotlight the gospel harmonies of the Dry Branch Fire Squad, first-wave doo-woppers The Persuasions and raucous Maritimers The Tom Fun Orchestra. Heck, even ex-Barenaked Lady Steven Page is bound to be interesting when he takes the stage without his former safety net.

Still, it’s best to remember that there’s more going on in the city, and some of it is pretty danged awesome. Take the 10 for $10 Hardcore Tour next Wednesday, July 29 at The Warehouse. Poison the Well have the headlining slot, and acts like Terror, Death Before Dishonor, War of Ages, This is Hell and The Mongoloids will be along for the ride, although the specific Calgary lineup doesn’t seem to have been confirmed. Still, at $1 a band, you’re getting your money’s worth.

Earlier in the week, Steam Whistle beer will team up with the Quickdraw Animation Society (the folks who brought the great Don Hertzfeld to town for last year’s GIRAF festival) for the latest show in their Unsigned music series. Blues-rockers Little Foot Long Foot, electro-garagers The Square Waves and Montreal synth-poppers Mixylodian will all be at Broken City on Friday, July 24, with the proceeds going to Quickdraw.

On Thursday, July 23 (to keep with the achronological pattern), DJ A-Trak will be spinning at the HiFi. It’s been 12 years since A-Trak won the DMC World DJ Championship and he’s been keeping a high profile ever since, including a slot as Kanye West’s current tour DJ — not bad for a 27-year-old.

Lastly, this weekend marks the release of local pop-jazz outfit Heather Blush and the Uppercuts’ newest album, Versa, the followup to last year’s well-received Vice (see what she did there?). Catch her at The Ironwood on Saturday, July 25.
