Shrapnelles

Brand new all-girl quartet the Shrapnelles features a cast of young ladies who have been involved with projects as disparate as Friendo, the Topless Mongos, the Throwaways, the Latter Days and Rape Revenge. Falling somewhere between all those sounds, the band utilizes four-part harmonies, jangly guitars and a four-on-the-floor garage stomp for maximum fun.

“Basically, there weren't any boys in town who were as hot and/or amazing as everyone in the band,” explains drummer and occasional guitarist K-Hole. “Besides, all-girl bands are the best! We all play in bands with boys already, and we really wanted less drama.” Guitarist Nic Greasy has a similar outlook, saying, “The best part of an all-girl band is how people will come see our shows even if they don't like the music.”

Before leaving for tour with Friendo earlier in the year, Nic asked K-Hole, along with now-members Rizz Jizz and Germ Moregrime to start jamming some pop songs.

“Nic asked us if we wanted to form an all-girl, ’60s garage-punk band and we all said ‘Yes’ right away,” K-Hole recalls. “She was about to head on tour with Friendo for the summer, Rizz Jizz and Germ were gone with Rape Revenge and I still needed to learn drums. So we waited a few months before we really got going.”

When they did get going, they burst onto the scene with their five-song CD-R, September 11th Demos, a rough-and-tumble collection that excellently showcases the girls' abilities to craft scrappy garage-pop that sticks with you. By the end of October, the group will be five shows into a career that has many future plans.

“In March we're doing a six-week American tour,” K-hole explains emphatically. Greasy, on the other hand, might see the trip a little differently. When asked about the group's touring plans, she says, simply, “A one-way ticket to Mardi Gras!”
