Share and share alike

So much to do in Calgary this week. So much!

This looks to be one of those weeks where there’s far more going on than this humble column can contain. So, without further ado….

Andrew Sisk is the unassuming heart and soul of Share, the Haligonian indie-folk quintet heading to the Palomino this Friday, March 12. Sisk’s songs sound straightforward at first, but they’re full of enough perfect little touches and subtle hooks that they knock you over through cumulative force. Plus, with locals Ryan Bourne, Matt Gigg and the Intellectuals and Forest Tate Fraser on the bill, you’ll be able to cut the understated pop brilliance with a knife.

Also on Friday, Austin-via-Winnipeg duo Twilight Hotel will be brandishing its blend of surf-noir and rootsy folk at Mikey’s Juke Joint — think Luke Doucet’s quieter moments, but with more harmonies and a hint of cabaret showmanship.

Come Saturday, March 13, you’ll want to head back to the Palomino for the double-bill of Brent Randall and Kate Maki, with Extra Happy Ghost !!! handling opening duties. Randall’s band, The Pinecones, recently shifted gears from eclectic pop to a more focused ’60s-psych sound, but this solo performance is likely to draw from his complete catalogue. Maki, meanwhile, will be perfectly at home in a solitary setting — her songs shine brightest with minimal adornment.

If that’s a bit too low-key for your Saturday night, there’s always Philadelphia DJ Diplo, who’ll be spinning at Flames Central. Considering that he’s remixed everyone from Britney Spears to Spoon and has worked with the likes of M.I.A., Santigold, Spank Rock and Justice, you shouldn’t need my endorsement to check this one out. B.C.’s Mat the Alien will be opening.

Then, on Wednesday, March 17, singer, multi-instrumentalist and one-man cult of personality Hawksley Workman will be at the Jack Singer. Over the years, Workman has taken on T.Rex rock, Tin Pan Alley balladry and radio-friendly R&B with the same zeal, but he’s always been best live, where he can ooze charm and sexuality in equal measure.

Lastly, Thursday, March 18 has three incredibly solid options: Postdata, the more delicate side-project of Wintersleep’s Paul Murphy, will be at The Republik with Clinton St. John and Julie Fader for a pretty undeniable triple-bill; one-man band Bradley will bring his effortless blend of Eels-style melancholy and pulsing electro to Broken City; and Kansas City MC Tech N9ne will bring his dark beats, chaotic stage presence and ultra-precise delivery to The Whiskey. Your best bet? Clone yourself and catch all three.

Thanks for giving me way too much to do this week, Peter. Thursday especially will be hard, as my self-cloning processes are as yet only producing grey lumps that resemble me, but only live to drink and make asses of themselves.
