Now that Calgary’s Juno intoxication has subsided, music fans are bound to be feeling a bit rundown. Still, there’s never been a better hangover cure than a bit of hair-of-the-dog — so why not keep the music flowing?
There are few Alberta musicians better suited to keeping the crowd buzzed than Lyle Bell. Not one to limit his options, Bell’s been a driving force in a surprising number of Edmonton’s best bands, including Slow Fresh Oil, Molly’s Reach, Whitey Houston and Shout Out Out Out Out. This Saturday, he’s bringing his rock ’n’ roll marching band The Wet Secrets to the HiFi for a night of CD release debauchery. Never mind subtlety— Bell prefers to keep things as blatant as possible, as songs like “Hep A Birthday” and the infectious “Grow Your Own Fucking Moustache, Asshole” perfectly attest.
Bell’s not the only Edmontonian releasing a new disc in Calgary this week, either. The equally secretive Ann Vriend played to a sold out crowd when she put out When We Were Spies in Edmonton, and her Calgary release at the Ironwood on Thursday, April 10 should be every bit as memorable. Vriend’s been drawing comparisons to everyone from Leonard Cohen to Regina Spektor — her polished pop is full of clever lyrics and sharp hooks.
Few releases this year have been as polished as Caribou’s immaculately produced Andorra, a near-perfect bit of pop-psychedelia. Not too long ago, Caribou’s Dan Snaith brought his shimmering melodies and layered percussion to The Warehouse, along with the equally fantastic Born Ruffians. They returned last month, and now he’s back, this time with experimental noise group Fuck Buttons, and playing at The Grand theatre on Wednesday, April 16. The Grand is known for its superb acoustics, which will suit Snaith’s sound perfectly.
While the Grand’s acoustics are helping crowds pick up on the complexity of Snaith’s music, Knox United Church will be showing off the simplicity of country crooner Lyle Lovett. There’s a reason Lovett’s career has lasted for over two decades and 13 albums. His songwriting is completely charming (just try not to smile at lines like “if I had a boat, I’d go out on the ocean/ and if I had a pony, I’d ride it on my boat”) and his voice is remarkably smooth. If you don’t catch him on April 16, though, fear not — he’s doing an encore performance on April 17.
