It might be getting harder to come up with snappy, attention-grabbing introductions to the world of free, legal music every month, but it’s not getting any harder to find quality material to talk about. Sorting through it all is an increasingly daunting task, but, as always, Radio Silence is here to do the dirty work — including some local music, for a change.
The Very Best — The Very Best Mixtape (www.sendspace.com/file/97hx6w)
Though the name of this collaboration between Malawi-born singer Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit might be intended as tongue in cheek, it’s not actually that far from the mark. The Very Best Mixtape is a primer for a forthcoming full-length album by the collaborators, and if the quality displayed here is any indication, that full-length will be something special.
Mwamwaya has been riding a crest of praise online, thanks to his playful demeanour and silky vocals, which are on fine display here. He possesses one of those rare voices that fills listeners with warmth and puts grins on their faces, even though he spends most of The Very Best Mixtape singing in Chichewa. The production by the U.K.’s Radioclit is occasionally lacking, offering fairly straight rips of M.I.A.’s ubiquitous “Paper Planes” and Vampire Weekend’s “Cape Cod Kwasa Kwasa,” but Mwamwaya more than makes up for any shortcomings. The Very Best Mixtape might not be the very best, but it is pretty damn good.
Round Table Knights — Autumn Mix (www.roundtableknights.ch/mix/daten/mix_autumn_08.mp3)
Seasonally themed mixes aren’t anything new, but they do tend to skew rather sharply towards spring and summer, as it seems every DJ has a secret desire to soundtrack barbecues. Switzerland’s Round Table Knights offer up something a little different with their Autumn Mix, which concerns itself more with hot apple cider than grilling meat and mixing margaritas. It still has its share of dance floor moments from the likes of Zombie Disco Squad, Cut Copy and Mr. Oizo. What sets it apart from other mixes and solidifies its autumnal theme, though, is the inclusion of more contemplative material, like the expert use of Department of Eagles’ beautiful “No One Does It Like You,” a song that seems tailor-made for grey days when both the temperature and the leaves are falling.
Smalltown DJs — Discobelle Mix (www.zshare.net/audio/5056419371f1b13e/)
Unfortunately, while there’s always a surplus of free and legal music to sift through online, not much of it is local. Calgary party mainstays Smalltown DJs are happy to remedy this, though, with the mix they recently put together for Discobelle. As anyone who’s caught one of their sets in the past few years can tell you, the Smalltown DJs are all about having as good a time as humanly possible, and this mix is no different. Here Mike Grimes and Pete Emes create a seamless, relentless 45-minute disco juggernaut featuring the likes of Hercules & Love Affair, Jamie Lidell, DJ Sneak, Afrika Bambaataa and Pete Heller.
