Fishbone got the short end of the stick. Really, in an era when people are getting Bad Brains lightning bolts tattooed to their necks, the other other black punk originators languish in relative obscurity — maybe it’s because BB’s less-than-savoury, late-game dalliances are attributed to H.R.’s batshit insanity. No such excuse for Fishbone. Either way, Angelo Moore’s a friggin’ genius, and his band plays at Ship & Anchor on Thursday, April 14 — all hands on deck.
Next, head to the Palomino, where Erin Ross performs upstairs on Friday, April 15. Showcasing a deft blend of fingerpicked country and blues, Ross can soothe with honeyed vocals or command with a smokier timbre. Otherwise, there’s always downstairs, where local quirky pop outfit Pine Tarts performs with No River. Can’t lose!
Next, Dan Bejar — who, sadly, doesn’t seem to be able to shake his association with the New Pornographers, despite a stellar solo career — lands at the Legion No. 1 on Saturday, April 16. With Destroyer, Bejar’s restlessness is front and centre: Midi-centric backbeats? Sure. Swirling, jazzy chamber pop? It’s there. Descriptors never really do his music justice — seriously, try reading a few reviews — so it’s best to grab a copy of his latest, Kaputt, and catch it in person. The War on Drugs join.
Elsewhere, Calgary singer-songwriter Sarah Vann, whose voice ranges from in-the-ear whispers to a powerful bellow, releases her new CD, Deafened, at the Auburn Saloon. Or Southern Fried bass-bringer Neoteric lands at Hifi with Hatchmatic. And before you ask, they’re not part of any clown posse. Thankfully.
Checking in with the rest of the week’s festivities: Go metal on Sunday, April 16 with Kataplexis and Archspire at Dickens. Veteran Vancouver folk trio Willy Blizzard takes a break from the house circuit to perform at the Ironwood on Tuesday, April 19. Finally, Calgary says goodbye (for now) to one of its finest when Jay Crocker performs at a night of improv fun at Weeds Café, with Ryan Bourne, Chris Dadge, Eric Hamelin and more. And if that wasn’t enough, visual artist Joe Kelly should keep things weird. Send Jay off to the East Coast with love.
