Good Friday goings

Your guide to keeping busy during the long weekend

Last week’s Goings On already dealt with the plethora of options on April Fool’s Day, so if you’re reading this on April 1, go dig up last week’s issue (pro tip: Wax Mannequin and The Burning Hell at The Palomino is going to be amazing). The rest of the week’s a bit slower than usual, but that just means easier choices.

First up, on Friday, April 2, there are two main options: Let Ontario indie-pop trio The Balconies jingle-jangle its way into your heart at Vern’s in the second of three Calgary stops on its current tour (the third’ll be an acoustic set at Higher Ground on Monday, April 12), or hoot ’n’ holler your way through Rich Hope’s barnstorming boogie-rock at Broken City. The latter option also includes a set from Calgary’s own Ramblin’ Ambassadors, and that might clinch the deal right there.

This column doesn’t usually spotlight benefit shows, but I’m making an exception for the community garden fundraiser at South Calgary Community Centre on Saturday, April 3. With Thighs providing the indie pop and Clinton St. John serving up the avant-folk, not to mention sets from Ellen McIlwaine, Clea Roddick and Wheat & Water, it’d be worthwhile even without a cause.

None of that quite heavy enough? Well, there’s always math-rockers The Dillinger Escape Plan at The Republik on Tuesday, April 6 if you’re looking to get your shriek on. They’ll be headlining a bill that also includes the proggy Animals as Leaders, the guttural Darkest Hour and the poorly named iwrestledabearonce. I don’t believe anyone in that band has actually wrestled a bear.

Craving some organ stimulation? The University of Calgary’s Department of Music is bringing organist Kraig Scott to the Rosza Centre for “2010 An Organ Odyssey,” which will somehow revolve around the concept of anniversaries and the number 10, also on April 6. Or, if you want to get less cerebral and more hands-on with your organ play, Calgary’s Sinistrio will host an open jam at the Beat Niq on Thursday, April 8. Grooves will be laid, no doubt about it.

Lastly, garage-thrash duo Lullabye Arkestra is storming the Republik on Wednesday, April 7. The pair’s biggest single and personal mantra is “We Fuck the Night,” so if you like nights and the fucking thereof, this is the show for you.
