Choose your adventure: If it’s charming pop ye seek, head to the Palomino on Friday, March 4 to catch the major-scale bliss of Vancouver’s Treelines, whose musical vocabulary spans from introspective folk to Revulation Records-styled road-trip bangers. Newfoundland folksters Mountains and the Trees and locals Weigh Anchors join in. For a more eclectic, spazzy path, head to Broken City to catch the math-spastic This City Defects, which releases its sophomore album Patterns before embarking on a U.S. tour. Don’t miss the excellent punk rock of Stalwart Sons, the instrumental madness of Gunther or the confrontational fuzz of Bikeland either.
The weekend’s festivities aren’t limited to those with ID, though — and Revolution Summer fans, take note. On Saturday, March 5, Undermountain — perhaps an emerging hope for a city lacking in all-ages venues — hosts an evening ram-packed with excellent music courtesy of Edmonton melodic throat shredders Todos Caeran and the gang-vocal-powered, anything-but-skramz of Book of Caverns. Local fave Stalwart Sons, making its second weekend appearance, and Nancees round out the bill. For those still on the musical hunt, head to Local 522 for Kris Demeanor and accordionist-songwriter Geoff Berner, whose heavily anticipated Victory Party will be released by Mint Records this month.
Or skip it all for a toga party with Caught off Guard, Shotgun Dolls and Black Earth at Vern’s. No, really. This is a toga party. Bring a bedsheet and a lampshade, or you’ll be charged extra at the door.
Finally, next week debuts with flying colours. Laila Biali lands at the Ironwood on Tuesday, March 8 with a pocketful of smooth, piano-driven jazz tunes from her latest offering, Tracing Light; it’s likely the antithesis of the grounded-without-a-cellphone rage of Papa Roach, which lands at MacEwan Hall on the same evening. Follow that up with the temp-tay-she-ahhn of ex-Tea Party frontman Jeff Martin, who performs new songs at Republik on Thursday, March 10. We won’t make any Jim Morrison-look-alike jokes. We promise.
