Byrne-ing down the house

Terrible puns do no justice to musical legend

An Evening with David Byrne
Jack Singer Concert Hall

More in: Rock / Pop

Before getting to the rest of the week, best get this out of the way — David Byrne will perform at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Monday, February 23, touring behind last year’s collaboration with Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. Byrne’s sets on this tour have drawn heavily from his most recent album, but the shows have featured music from all of Byrne’s collaborations with Eno, meaning classics like his Catherine Wheel soundtrack and The Talking Heads’ Remain in Light and Fear of Music are all fair game. Miss it at your own peril.

While Byrne certainly casts a long shadow, this week isn’t lacking for alternative music events. Broken City is bringing the weirdness two nights in a row, first with Kelowna’s merry band of psychedelic hillbillies, The Stolen Organ Family Band, on Thursday, February 19, and then with Toronto’s unclassifiable (and unpronounceable) DD/MM/YYYY on February 20. The DD/MM/YYYY show has also had a last-minute lineup change — Regina rockers Sylvie have been replaced by Rah Rah, which features members of Sylvie, Geronimo and Despistado (which featured members of Sylvie and Geronimo back before those bands existed). Expect hints of spazz-punk, post-rock and general awesomeness.

Montreal trip hop duo Beast will be at The Gateway on Saturday, February 21. With origins in soundtrack work (vocalist Betty Bonifassi worked on the much-loved Triplets of Belleville score, and she met fellow Beast Jean-Phi Goncalves while making mood music for a video game), Beast know how to establish an atmosphere, and their sound draws as much from industrial music as hip hop and R&B.

To further sate your electronic appetite, don’t miss the first annual Beat and Groove tour, hitting The Soda on Wednesday, February 24. The all-Canadian lineup is heavy on talent — beat boxer Shamik has toured with Method Man and Thievery Corporation, while drum and bass duo Greenlaw have earned accolades around the globe — and all the players are determined to prove that electronic music can hit just as hard as a rock show in a live setting.

But seriously, David Byrne on Monday. Don’t say we didn’t tell you.
