Balls-out rock ’n’ roll

Electric Six, Deadhorse and Mark Sultan will remove your socks

To the crowd at the sold-out Vampire Weekend show last week: If you like that Brooklyn band’s Upper West Side Soweto, you owe it to yourself to check out the Soweto Gospel Choir. The 26-piece South African choir may not have Vampire Weekend’s indie-rock hooks, but it’s certainly adept at winning over western audiences — including the voting pool at the Oscars, who gave the choir a nod for its work on the Wall-E soundtrack — and its performance at The Banff Centre on Friday, March 19 is going to be spectacular.

If you can’t make the trip out of town, though, there’s always Edmonton’s ridiculously catchy Christian Hansen and the Autistics, which will be at The Marquee Room alongside Seven Story Redhead. Pulsing electronic beats, infectious melodies and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about sex, drugs and onanism — what more do you need for a Friday night dance party?

Hansen and co. aren’t the only schlock-heavy rockers in town this week, either. Detroit’s brilliantly dumb Electric Six has booked a two-night stint at Broken City, and that’s the kind of news that can only be greeted with fist-pumps and head-bangs. The Saturday night show is already sold out, but you should still be able to finagle your way in on Sunday, March 21. Just keep your fingers crossed (and be sure to check out our interview at ffwdweekly.com).

If that glaring “sold out” notice on Broken City’s website has you scrambling for Saturday night plans, there’s always Deadhorse at The Marquee Room, the homegrown option in a weekend of party bands. Don’t let the fact that the band is led by a couple of former Consonant C members throw you — Deadhorse is primarily about partying, and what’s left over is devoted to balls-out rock jams. Plus, with the country raucous of Cowpuncher and the oddball folk of Robin Hunter and the Six Foot Bullies on the bill, you really can’t go wrong.

Rounding out the week, garage-rock god Mark Sultan (better known as BBQ of the King Khan and BBQ Show) will be in Calgary on Wednesday, March 24, scorching the stage at Broken City with the pure power of rock ’n’ roll. And, just to make it a lineup worth crawling over glass for, Edmonton’s Michael Rault is also on the bill, and that kid channels the raunchy side of pre-Beatles rock ’n’ roll so effortlessly it’s almost scary.
