You might remember LeE HARVeY OsMOND from its blistering set at this year’s Calgary Folk Music Festival. If you didn’t catch the band then, or if you don’t remember it, here’s all you need to know about the acid-folk outfit: It’s Tom Wilson of Junkhouse and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, with members of The Cowboy Junkies and The Skydiggers. They’ll be playing at The Gateway at SAIT this Friday, October 16, and the small bar will probably suit them better than a festival stage, anyway. They’ll be joined by British folk-rocker Jon Amor and Montreal’s Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few.
If you prefer your rock a bit more balls-out, Regina’s Hot Blood Bombers are at Broken City on Friday with Calgary’s Miesha and the Spanks and Pine Tarts. If you have any intention of standing quietly and applauding politely, you might want to skip this one.
Saturday, October 17 sees Austin’s …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead hit The Warehouse, along with Welsh rockers Future of the Left. It’s been seven years since Trail of Dead put out the instant classic Source Tags & Codes, an album good enough to forgive a pair of mediocre followups, but this year’s Century of Self is actually something of a return to form. And Future of the Left features two members of the much-loved mclusky, so… expect shenanigans.
Also, it’d be a mistake not to mention that Matisyahu is playing on Saturday at Flames Central. Personally, I find that his Hasidic take on reggae fusion works best during the instrumental portions of his newest album, Light, but he definitely knows how to deliver live.
Country singer-songwriter John Prine pre-dates the alt.country movement by a couple of decades, but his blend of classic folk, gritty vocals and wry humour is exactly the kind of music modern Americana acts are hoping to recapture. It’s been a while since he put out an album (his last was the covers album Standard Songs for Average People), but he still has almost 30 years of material to draw from when he takes the stage at the Jack Singer this Monday, October 19.
Lastly, Stars chanteuse Amy Millan will show off her rustic side at The Marquee Room on Tuesday, October 20. The singer, who also occasionally sings in Broken Social Scene, recently released her second solo effort, Masters of the Burial, on Arts & Crafts. She’s joined by Toronto singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen, a.k.a. Bahamas.
